Milan appoint Ruben Amorim as head coach after Man Utd exit

Ruben Amorim has been appointed head coach of AC Milan, marking a swift return to management after he was dismissed by Manchester United in January.

The Portuguese tactician will now continue his career in Serie A with Milan, who ended last season in fifth place and narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification.

Speaking after his appointment, Amorim said in a club statement,”There are ambitions that stay with you throughout your career, and coaching AC Milan has always been one of mine.”

“I know exactly what this Club means: history, prestige and an extraordinary fanbase around the world. It is a challenge I embrace with pride and enthusiasm, fully aware of what these colors represent.

“I can’t wait to get started and to experience every day the passion that drives AC Milan.”

The 41-year-old arrives at San Siro following Milan’s decision to part ways with Massimiliano Allegri at the end of the 2025-26 campaign, a season that also saw them finish fifth in Serie A.

Amorim previously built his managerial reputation in Portugal with Casa Pia, Braga and Sporting CP before taking charge at Old Trafford.

His spell in England lasted 14 months, ending midway through the previous season when Michael Carrick stepped in as interim manager and later secured the role permanently.

Sources have indicated that Manchester United could reduce part of the compensation owed to Amorim following his move to Milan.

Club accounts published in February revealed a provision of £15.9 million tied to payments for Amorim and his coaching staff, though this figure is expected to decrease depending on the final agreement.

AC Milan are scheduled to face Manchester United in a pre-season friendly in Poland on August 15.
