The Niger State Police Command has confirmed that suspected bandits killed three people during an attack on Pissa village in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
Spokesperson of the command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday, said the attackers invaded the community at about 9:00 a.m.
He disclosed that several houses were also set on fire during the assault, while noting that security forces, including the military, responded to the incident, though full details of the encounter were still unclear.
“The report received indicated that suspected bandits invaded Pissa village in Borgu LGA.
“Three persons were reportedly killed during the attack, and some houses were set ablaze.
“However, the military responded and engaged the terrorists, but further details are still sketchy,” he said.
The incident came shortly after the Niger State government and police had dismissed earlier reports of an alleged invasion that caused panic in Minna, the state capital, on Wednesday, leading to an abrupt end of school activities as pupils rushed home.
Students and pupils were said to have fled their schools before closing time after rumours spread that bandits had entered the city.
Parents, alarmed by the reports, contacted school authorities to verify whether there had been any attack or official closure for the day.
However, at the time, Abiodun had assured residents that security agencies were on top of the situation.
The statement added that police officers visited schools in the affected areas and confirmed that no attack had taken place within the state.
