Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has stepped down as the National Chairman of the African Action Congress (AAC) shortly after securing the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections.
The party announced the development in a statement on Tuesday, confirming that Sowore’s resignation followed his emergence as the AAC flagbearer during its primaries held in Abuja.
“The African Action Congress wishes to inform the public that Omoyele Sowore has officially resigned as the National Chairman of the party,” the statement read.
It added that a new leadership has already been put in place, naming Samuel Ajeigbe as the party’s new national chairman.
“The party hereby welcomes Samuel Ajeigbe as the new National Chairman of our great party,” AAC stated.
Sowore was unanimously endorsed by delegates and party leaders at the convention, where he received the party’s presidential ticket amid applause from supporters drawn from across the country.
After accepting the nomination, Sowore reiterated his long-standing call for political reform, insisting that the AAC was founded to challenge corruption, insecurity, and poor governance in Nigeria.
According to him, “We built this party to create a new Nigeria, one that is free from corruption, insecurity, and bad leadership.”
He also commended party members for sustaining their commitment despite economic hardship and political pressure.
Taking aim at the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Sowore accused the party of failing Nigerians and attempting to manipulate public perception ahead of the 2027 polls.
He further dismissed claims about APC membership strength, stating: “There is no way the APC can claim to have 10 million members. I can guarantee you they cannot even boast of 10,000 committed members.”
The leadership change is seen as a major restructuring within the AAC as it begins preparations for the 2027 general elections.
