The Federal Government has announced a 50 per cent reduction in fares on all passenger train services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation to ease transportation costs for Nigerians travelling during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The fare discount, which takes effect from Tuesday, May 26, will run until Monday, June 1, 2026, according to the Federal Ministry of Transportation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Funsho Adebiyi, the government said the move was aimed at making travel more affordable for citizens celebrating the Muslim festival.
Adebiyi stated that passengers travelling on NRC routes across the country within the six-day period would pay half of the existing approved fares.
“The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Transportation, has approved a 50 per cent fare discount on all train services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation as part of measures to ease transportation costs for Nigerians during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration,” he said.
He explained that the intervention forms part of efforts by the government to support Nigerians amid rising travel expenses during the festive period.
The ministry also assured passengers who had earlier purchased train tickets at full fare that they would benefit from the initiative through a rebate system.
“Passengers who had earlier purchased tickets at the full fare before the announcement will be entitled to a 50 per cent rebate, reusable for train rides on or before Monday, June 1, 2026,” Adebiyi added.
Despite the fare reduction, the ministry noted that train operations and schedules across all routes would remain unchanged throughout the celebration period.
The Federal Ministry of Transportation further appreciated Nigerians for their patronage of rail services and extended goodwill wishes to Muslim faithful marking Eid-el-Kabir.
“The Federal Ministry of Transportation appreciates the continued support of Nigerians and wishes all passengers and the Muslim faithful a peaceful and joyous Eid-el-Kabir celebration. Eid Mubarak,” the statement read.
