La Liga: Rayo Vallecano hold Valencia to 1-1 draw

Valencia CF and Rayo Vallecano played out a 1-1 draw at Mestalla Stadium, a result that did little to ease relegation nerves but kept both sides edging toward top-flight safety in a tightly packed bottom half of La Liga.

Rayo Vallecano started the brighter of the two sides and had an early chance to seize control from the penalty spot after Renzo Saravia was penalised for a foul on Pacha inside the area.

However, Randy Nteka failed to convert, his spot-kick crashing against the post and letting Valencia off the hook.

Valencia CF responded with pressure of their own and nearly opened the scoring when Javi Guerra dragged a close-range effort just wide of the upright.

The hosts were made to pay for their missed opportunity in the 20th minute when Rayo Vallecano struck from a set piece. Florian Lejeune rose above his marker to meet Gerard Gumbau’s corner, powering a header into the net to put the visitors in front.

Rayo Vallecano could have doubled their advantage soon after, as Nteka was played through by Gumbau, but Stole Dimitrievski reacted quickly to make a crucial save and keep Valencia in the contest.

That intervention proved decisive, with Valencia CF drawing level before the break. Diego López finished calmly from close range after Hugo Duro pulled the ball back from the byline, restoring parity in a lively first half.

The second period lacked the same intensity, with both sides disrupted by injuries. José Gayà was forced off for Valencia CF, while Rayo Vallecano lost Gerard Gumbau, adding to earlier setbacks after Renzo Saravia’s first-half exit.

As the game wore on, momentum faded and both teams struggled to impose themselves, with misplaced passes and broken rhythm frustrating the home crowd at Mestalla Stadium.

Clear chances were rare, although César Tárrega went close late on, heading narrowly wide in stoppage time.

In the end, neither side could find a winner, a result that leaves both Valencia CF and Rayo Vallecano slightly closer to securing their LaLiga status for another season, even if European ambitions remain just within reach.
