Two killed in Lagos-Badagry Expressway crash

A pedestrian and a motorcyclist have lost their lives in a fatal road crash involving a truck along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Lagos State.

The incident occurred near the Iyana-Iba Flyover inward the main gate of the Lagos State University, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, preliminary findings showed that a heavily loaded bucket truck was reportedly speeding from the Volkswagen area toward Badagry when it struck and killed a pedestrian.

According to the agency, the truck driver allegedly failed to stop after the initial impact and continued driving along the route.

“Rather than bringing the vehicle to an immediate halt after the initial impact, the truck driver recklessly continued his movement along the corridor,” the statement said.

LASTMA explained that the situation worsened when a motorcyclist, accompanied by another person, attempted to intercept the fleeing truck to compel the driver to stop.

The agency said the chase turned tragic after the truck reportedly rammed into the motorcycle.

“In a shocking turn of events, the truck driver rammed violently into the motorcycle during the pursuit, resulting in the instantaneous death of the motorcyclist,” the statement added.

The accompanying passenger on the motorcycle reportedly escaped unharmed.

Operatives of LASTMA’s Night Gang Surveillance and Monitoring Patrol Team were said to have responded to the scene and carried out evacuation efforts.

The agency disclosed that officials evacuated the remains of the motorcyclist after the victim became trapped beneath the front tyre of the truck.

The truck driver was arrested at the scene and handed over to security operatives at the PPL Police Post, Okokomaiko, alongside officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps for further investigation.

While the remains of the motorcyclist were evacuated by FRSC officials, the pedestrian who died earlier was released to family members after they were notified.

Authorities also moved the truck and the damaged motorcycle to the police post pending further investigation.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the crash as a painful reminder of the dangers of reckless driving, particularly among truck operators.

“This unfortunate incident is a painful reminder of the grave consequences of reckless driving,” he said.

Bakare-Oki urged motorists to obey speed regulations and exercise caution on the roads.

“Road users must always comply strictly with regulated speed limits and exercise utmost caution, both during daytime and nocturnal operations,” he stated.

He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to sustained traffic enforcement, surveillance, and emergency rescue operations across Lagos roads.
