La Liga: Akor Adams fires Sevilla to 2-1 win over Espanyol

Sevilla’s fight for LaLiga survival received a major lift at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium, as a late comeback sealed a 2-1 win over Espanyol, with Super Eagles forward Akor Adams delivering the decisive strike deep into stoppage time.

The result marked only the second time this season the Andalusian side have won after conceding first in the league, underlining the resilience behind their escape bid in LaLiga.

The match itself began in chaotic fashion, delayed by around 10 minutes due to a pre-match VAR malfunction that only heightened the tense atmosphere inside the stadium.

Once action got underway, Espanyol looked sharpest early on, with Edu Expósito coming closest in the first half when he found space inside the box, only to be denied by a smart diving save from Odysseas Vlachodimos down to his left.

Sevilla thought they had unlocked Espanyol early in the second half after the interval introduction of Alexis Sánchez added immediate spark and intensity in attack.

A scramble inside the box eventually saw Rubén Vargas involved in a sequence that ended with Sánchez tapping home from close range, but celebrations were cut short as the Chilean was flagged offside.

That reprieve proved costly for the hosts, as Espanyol struck shortly after. Tyrhys Dolan grew into the game after the restart and played a key role in the breakthrough, linking up with Roberto Fernández before a defensive mix-up allowed him to control the loose ball and finish low into the bottom-left corner past Marko Dmitrović.

Sevilla responded with urgency, throwing bodies forward in search of an equaliser. José Ángel Carmona came close to redemption from a set piece but headed over from close range after another Sánchez delivery caused panic in the Espanyol box.

His moment would eventually come in the 82nd minute, though, as he drove forward from deep, weaved into the area and calmly finished beneath Dmitrović to level the contest.

With momentum fully shifted, Sevilla pushed for a winner, and their pressure finally told in stoppage time.

As Espanyol’s defence tired, Akor Adams found space outside the box and unleashed a powerful curling effort into the bottom-right corner, completing the turnaround and sending the home crowd into celebration.

Espanyol had no response in the final moments, leaving Sevilla to climb to 12th place with a crucial three-point cushion above the relegation zone.
