The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission, has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the state’s electricity market with the issuance of licences to 14 operators across the electricity value chain.
Speaking during the commission’s maiden Stakeholders’ Engagement Forum held in Ikeja on Thursday, the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Member of LASERC, Mrs. Temitope George, described the event as a major milestone in the development of the state’s electricity sector.
She said the forum reflected the commission’s dedication to transparency, collaboration, and inclusive stakeholder participation.
According to George, “This engagement marks the beginning of a new regulatory era focused on building a functional, efficient, innovative, and consumer-centred electricity market capable of supporting Lagos State’s economic ambitions.”
She noted that LASERC’s vision is to emerge as a leading electricity regulator by promoting sustainable electricity development and improving residents’ quality of life.
George added that the commission remained committed to setting and enforcing standards, protecting consumers, encouraging investments, supporting innovation, and promoting clean energy solutions across the state.
As part of efforts to improve consumer protection and service delivery, she disclosed that LASERC would establish zonal offices in Ikorodu, Amuwo Odofin/Badagry, and Sangotedo/Epe.
“The offices are expected to become operational in the third quarter of the year,” she stated.
George stressed that sustainable growth in the electricity sector would require strong partnerships, shared responsibilities, and continuous engagement among stakeholders.
She further explained that the ongoing reforms in Lagos’ electricity ecosystem were creating opportunities for investment, infrastructure development, innovation, and the adoption of modern clean-energy technologies.
During the forum, LASERC officials presented the commission’s regulatory agenda, market performance highlights, retail service code, and regulatory orders to stakeholders.
The presentations were delivered by George; Executive Member, Licensing and Economic Regulation, Olakunle Falola; Executive Member, Engineering and Standards, Adekunle Olopade; and the Lagos Independent System Operator Network Operator, Adetunji Adesanya.
According to the commission, the presentations provided insights into its immediate, short-term, and long-term strategies aimed at strengthening the Lagos electricity market.
The Chairman of the Board, Alexander Ogunbiyi, also presented licences and permits to 14 compliant operators in recognition of their adherence to regulatory requirements and industry standards.
LASERC stated that the move underscored its commitment to building a structured, accountable, and fully regulated electricity market in Lagos State.
The event featured interactive sessions and contributions from development partners, investors, market operators, artisans, community representatives, consumer groups, media practitioners, and other stakeholders on ways to address industry challenges and ensure sustainable sector growth.
