Serie A: Lazio edge Cremonese 2-1, deepen relegation woes

Cremonese’s fight to avoid an immediate return to Serie B suffered another setback as they were beaten 2-1 at home by Lazio at the Stadio Giovanni Zini, extending their winless run on home soil to 10 matches (D4, L6).

The early stages were largely controlled by Lazio, who came close to opening the scoring when Oliver Provstgaard directed a header across goal from Mattia Zaccagni’s inviting free-kick, but Cremonese managed to survive the scare during a dominant opening spell from the visitors.

Despite struggling to settle into the game, the hosts took a surprise lead just before the half-hour mark.

Federico Bonazzoli unleashed a low effort from distance, and although it looked comfortably gatherable, Lazio goalkeeper Edoardo Motta misread the shot and allowed it to slip past him and into the net.

Riding the momentum of his eighth league goal of the season, Bonazzoli nearly doubled his tally before the interval with an audacious bicycle kick that forced another save from Motta, sending Cremonese into half-time ahead despite limited control of the match.

Lazio returned from the break with renewed urgency and began to tilt the contest in their favour.

Emil Audero was called into action on 50 minutes, producing a strong save to deny Alessio Romagnoli’s powerful header.

That warning proved costly for Cremonese. Nuno Tavares drove forward from deep inside his own half, slicing through the midfield before linking up with Tijjani Noslin.

The move ended with Gustav Isaksen finishing calmly from close range to restore parity.

As the match wore on, both managers, Maurizio Sarri and Marco Giampaolo, introduced late changes in search of a winner, including a brief appearance for Jamie Vardy following an injury setback in the game.

However, it was Lazio who struck decisively in stoppage time. Noslin found space on the edge of the box and produced a composed finish to complete the turnaround and secure all three points.

The result leaves Cremonese stranded in 18th place, four points away from safety with just three matches left to play.

Lazio, meanwhile, climb to eighth and now prepare for a demanding run-in that includes a clash with newly crowned champions Inter Milan and a Coppa Italia final just days later, where Sarri’s side must win to keep hopes of European qualification alive for the 2026–27 season.
