EPL: Tottenham edge Aston Villa 2-1, exit relegation zone

Tottenham boosted their Premier League survival hopes with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over a disappointing Aston Villa side at Villa Park, climbing out of the relegation zone in the process.

Spurs delivered arguably their most complete performance of the season, with first-half strikes from Conor Gallagher and Richarlison setting them on course for a vital three points.

Under Roberto De Zerbi, the North London club have begun to show renewed energy and structure, securing back-to-back league wins for the first time since August.

The result strengthens their position in the survival battle and leaves them increasingly confident of staying up.

Tottenham’s aggressive pressing and quick transitions unsettled Villa throughout, with their intensity across the pitch drawing comparisons to De Zerbi’s former Brighton side.

Villa, meanwhile, appeared flat and heavily rotated, seemingly distracted by their upcoming Europa League semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest.

Their performance reflected that lack of focus, as they struggled to create meaningful chances for most of the match.

Spurs dominated early proceedings and nearly struck inside two minutes when Richarlison’s effort was blocked after Gallagher forced a defensive error in Villa’s build-up play.

The breakthrough arrived in the 12th minute through Gallagher, who marked his first goal for the club in style, unleashing a powerful 25-yard drive into the bottom corner after Villa failed to clear a long throw.

Tottenham almost doubled their lead shortly after when João Palhinha’s low strike from distance was brilliantly pushed onto the post by Emiliano Martínez.

The Villa goalkeeper was again called into action, denying Randal Kolo Muani, but he could do nothing from the resulting corner. Richarlison reacted quickest in the box to nod home from close range after Martínez failed to deal with the delivery.

At 2-0 down, Villa looked out of ideas and Spurs controlled the game comfortably, dominating possession and second balls while limiting the hosts to very little threat.

The home side offered almost nothing after the restart and only managed to trouble Spurs goalkeeper Antonín Kinsky late on, when Emiliano Buendía headed in Matty Cash’s cross deep into stoppage time.

Despite the late consolation, Tottenham’s performance underlined their resurgence at a crucial stage of the season, putting them in a strong position to secure top-flight safety.
