EPL: 10-man Sunderland hold Wolves to 1-1 draw

Sunderland A.F.C. saw their push for European qualification suffer a setback after a 1-1 draw away to already-relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. in a match defined by a first-half red card and a missed opportunity to climb the table.

The visitors had started brightly and took the lead in the 17th minute when Nordi Mukiele rose highest to head home from a Granit Xhaka corner, punishing a static Wolves defence

. At that stage, Sunderland were in control and threatening to build momentum.

However, the match swung sharply in the 24th minute when Dan Ballard was dismissed following a VAR review. Referee Paul Tierney upgraded the incident to a straight red after Ballard was judged to have pulled the hair of Wolves forward Tolu Arokodare during an aerial duel.

The decision left Sunderland down to 10 men for over an hour and effectively altered the rhythm of the contest.

Wolves, bottom of the Premier League and without a goal in their previous three games, gradually grew into the match with the numerical advantage.

Despite their early struggles in the final third, they began to apply pressure and eventually found an equaliser just after the break.

Santiago Bueno met Hugo Bueno’s corner at the back post, powering a header beyond the goalkeeper after beating his marker to the delivery.

Sunderland A.F.C. protested for a foul in the build-up, but the goal stood, bringing Wolves back into a match they had trailed from early on.

The home side had further chances to turn the game around. André was denied after a scramble in the box, while Yerson Mosquera came close from close range but was thwarted by a crucial intervention from Omar Alderete.

Arokodare also spurned a late opportunity, failing to convert a well-placed cross as Wolves’ finishing again let them down.

Sunderland, despite being a man short, still threatened on the break. Adam Armstrong forced a save and later saw a long-range effort comfortably handled by Dan Bentley.

Granit Xhaka also went close with a powerful strike that flashed just wide.

The Black Cats also appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty after a suspected handball in the box involving Mateus Mané, but nothing was given.

In stoppage time, Arokodare had another chance to win it but could only steer his effort over the bar after being found by a lofted pass.

The draw leaves Sunderland A.F.C. in 12th place and frustrated, not only by dropped points but also by the likely suspension of Dan Ballard, which would rule him out for the remainder of the season.

It also marks a second similar disciplinary incident involving Arokodare this season, after Everton defender Michael Keane was previously sent off for a comparable offence during a January meeting.
