Julián Álvarez converted a second-half penalty as Atlético Madrid held Arsenal to a 1-1 draw in Madrid, canceling out Viktor Gyökeres’ first-half opener while also surpassing Lionel Messi as the fastest South American to reach 25 UEFA Champions League goals.
Arsenal edged in front just before the break after Dávid Hancko was adjudged to have pushed Gyökeres inside the box.
Following a VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot, and Gyökeres made no mistake, firing his effort straight down the middle past Jan Oblak to give the visitors a slender halftime lead.
Atlético responded shortly after the hour mark under similar circumstances. A corner delivery caused chaos in the Arsenal penalty area, and after another VAR check confirmed a handball, Álvarez stepped up to calmly dispatch the resulting penalty and restore parity.
The hosts nearly turned the game around moments later when Antoine Griezmann rattled the crossbar with a powerful strike, with David Raya beaten, before the rebound was scrambled away for a corner.
Late drama followed as Arsenal were initially awarded a second penalty after Hancko appeared to trip Eberechi Eze in the area.
However, VAR intervened once more, overturning the decision after ruling that Eze had already begun to fall before any contact.
Unlike the high-scoring spectacle between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich a day earlier, this contest was far more cautious and tactical, with both teams managing just one shot on target in a cagey first half.
Pre-match discussions had also focused on Arsenal’s request for UEFA to inspect the Metropolitano pitch over concerns about grass length, but the playing surface posed no issues.
In the end, a 1-1 draw was a fair reflection of a tightly contested encounter.
Both sides now head to the second leg at the Emirates Stadium with everything still to play for after an intense but ultimately inconclusive night in Madrid.
