La Liga: Camello fires Rayo Valleano to 1-0 win over Espanyol

Rayo Vallecano snatched a dramatic late victory at the Estadio de Vallecas, edging Espanyol 1-0 in their LaLiga Round 33 clash thanks to an 87th-minute strike from Sergio Camello.

The decisive goal crowned a game shaped by two key moments, Camello’s clinical finish off the bench and Dani Cárdenas’ crucial penalty save earlier in the second half.

Despite Espanyol posting the higher expected goals (xG), Rayo proved more efficient when it mattered.

The first half ended goalless, but the contest opened up after the restart as both sides searched for a breakthrough.

Late impact seals it for Rayo
Introduced in the 81st minute, Camello wasted no time making his presence felt. With just a handful of touches, he latched onto a perfectly weighted pass from Ilias Akhomach and fired home from the right channel.

The move was initiated by Andrei Rațiu, who had been influential down the flank throughout.

Rayo had already been knocking on the door, with Isi Palazón particularly lively, registering seven attempts on goal, while Rațiu added creativity with multiple key passes and accurate deliveries.

Espanyol goalkeeper Marko Dmitrović kept his side in the contest with a series of saves, but Rayo’s persistence and timely substitutions, ultimately paid off.

Cárdenas turns the tide
The turning point came in the 74th minute when Espanyol were awarded a penalty after Óscar Valentín’s challenge. Kike García stepped up, but Cárdenas produced a vital save, diving low to his left to deny the striker.

That moment proved decisive. García, who had been dangerous all night, ended with a high xG tally but failed to convert his biggest opportunity. Pere Milla also squandered a clear chance, summing up a frustrating night for the visitors.

Cárdenas finished with an outstanding performance, recording multiple saves, including two big stops, and preventing more than a goal based on the chances faced.

Fine margins decide the contest
Espanyol were sharper in duels and tackles, but couldn’t translate that into a goal. A handful of offsides and missed chances, along with seven minutes of added time, still weren’t enough to salvage a result.

Referee Adrián Cordero Vega issued six bookings in a tense encounter, while Rayo suffered a setback with Jozhua Vertrouwd forced off injured late on.

Manager Iñigo Pérez’s substitutions proved decisive, with both Camello and Akhomach combining for the winning goal shortly after coming on.

Cárdenas emerged as Rayo’s standout performer, with Rațiu and Akhomach also playing key roles. For Espanyol, Dmitrović’s efforts in goal stood out, but missed chances, particularly the penalty, ultimately cost them.
