La Liga: Levante beat Sevilla 2-0, ease relegation fears

Levante strengthened their survival hopes in LaLiga with a vital 2-0 win over Sevilla, claiming just their second head-to-head victory in the last 11 meetings.

Buoyed by their narrow 1-0 triumph over Getafe earlier in the week, Levante started brightly and nearly got an early breakthrough.

Referee José Sánchez initially awarded a penalty after Iván Romero went down under a challenge from Nemanja Gudelj, but VAR intervened to overturn the decision due to minimal contact.

That early scare failed to spark Sevilla into life, as Levante continued to press. Carlos Espí came close with a low curling effort that forced a fine save from Odysseas Vlachodimos, but the hosts eventually took the lead in the 38th minute.

Jon Ander Olasagasti delivered a delicate clipped pass into Romero’s path, and the forward responded with a powerful half-volley to put Levante ahead at the break.

Sevilla showed improvement after the restart and almost equalised immediately. Lucien Agoumé threaded a precise through ball to Rubén Vargas, but the winger lost his composure and fired over the bar.

Akor Adams also tested Levante from distance, narrowly missing the target with a fierce strike.

Despite Sevilla’s pressure, Levante had chances of their own, with Andrés Castrín producing a crucial last-ditch block to deny Espí midway through the second half.

Sevilla boss Luis García made wholesale changes, introducing all five substitutes—including Alexis Sánchez—in a bid to salvage a result.

The visitors thought they had earned a penalty when Pablo Martínez was accused of handball, but VAR again ruled against them.

Levante eventually sealed the win in stoppage time. Ugo Raghouber broke forward and unselfishly squared the ball for Romero, who tapped in his second of the night to wrap up a crucial victory.

The defeat leaves Sevilla hovering just one point above the relegation zone, while Levante move to within two points of safety after recording only their fifth home win of the campaign.
