Iran stopped planned execution of alleged anti-government protester, says Trump

United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday claimed that Iran had halted alleged plans to execute eight women detained over anti-government protests, following his appeal to Tehran to release them as part of broader peace efforts.

“I very much appreciate that Iran, and its leaders, respected my request, as President of the United States, and terminated the planned execution,” he said on his Truth Social platform.

However, Iranian authorities have denied that any such execution plans existed.

According to human rights organisations, at least one woman arrested during the January protests has already been sentenced to death, while another faces charges that could also lead to capital punishment.

Earlier, Trump had suggested in a social media post that freeing the women could positively influence ongoing negotiations, as he amplified an activist’s claim that eight women were at risk of execution by hanging.

The claim, though accompanied by photographs, did not identify the individuals involved.

Meanwhile, uncertainty continues to surround the outcome of US-Iran talks reportedly hosted by Pakistan.

A previous round of discussions broke down after Tehran accused Washington of making excessive demands, particularly concerning the Strait of Hormuz and its nuclear programme.

Rights groups have repeatedly accused the Islamic Republic of using capital punishment as a tool to instill fear, alleging a rise in executions of political detainees amid heightened tensions involving the United States and Israel.
