Lille OSC were frustrated in their push for a top-four cushion as they played out a tense 0-0 draw against OGC Nice on home soil.
The result denied the hosts a chance to move four points clear of Olympique de Marseille, while Nice picked up a crucial point in their bid to steer clear of the relegation playoff zone and widen the gap over AJ Auxerre.
As expected, Lille controlled possession for long spells, but Nice remained compact, sitting deep and waiting for opportunities to counter.
Despite the hosts’ dominance, clear-cut chances were at a premium in a first half that lacked cutting edge from both sides.
The closest either team came before the break arrived when Romain Perraud’s long-range effort took a deflection, forcing Yehvann Diouf into a brilliant fingertip save.
The goalkeeper proved dependable again moments later, reacting sharply to keep out Matias Fernandez-Pardo’s driven effort at the near post.
Nice thought they had stolen the lead when Elye Wahi finished off a move sparked by Mohamed Ali Cho, but celebrations were cut short after VAR ruled the striker narrowly offside.
The contest briefly sparked into life after the restart. Wahi was slipped through by Melvin Bard, but hesitation in front of goal allowed Aïssa Mandi to recover from an early sliding challenge and dispossess him.
At the other end, Lille nearly punished that miss when Chancel Mbemba headed Thomas Meunier’s delivery against the post, before Hákon Arnar Haraldsson sent the rebound wide.
Lille were then awarded a penalty after Perraud went down under a challenge from Antoine Mendy, but the referee overturned the decision following a VAR review, judging that the defender had made contact with the ball first.
In search of a breakthrough, Lille introduced fresh attacking options including Olivier Giroud, Ethan Mbappé, Osame Sahraoui, and Gaëtan Perrin.
However, Nice stood firm defensively to secure a hard-earned draw that could prove vital in their survival battle.
