Iran tightens restrictions on Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s central military command announced on Saturday that it would resume “strict management” of the Strait of Hormuz, effectively reversing an earlier decision to unblock the strategic maritime channel that had been tied to ongoing negotiations with Washington.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global shipping lane connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, and it is widely regarded as one of the world’s most important chokepoints for international oil and commercial shipping.

In its statement, the military command linked the reversal to what it described as continued restrictions affecting Iranian maritime activity, accusing the United States of failing to uphold earlier understandings connected to vessel movement in the region.

“In a statement shared on state television, the headquarters said Washington had broken a promise by continuing its naval blockade of ships sailing to and from Iran’s ports.”

The statement further warned that access through the waterway would remain tightly controlled unless conditions changed, underscoring the heightened tensions surrounding the strategic route.

“Until the United States restores freedom of movement for all vessels visiting Iran, “the situation in the Strait of Hormuz will remain strictly controlled,” the statement said.”
