UCL: Lookman fires Atletico into semis, breaks Barcelona hearts

Super Eagles forward, Ademola Lookman, emerged the hero as Atlético Madrid booked their place in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, progressing on aggregate despite a 2-1 home defeat to FC Barcelona at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

The encounter burst into life almost immediately, with goalkeeper Juan Musso producing a superb full-stretch save inside the opening minute to deny Lamine Yamal.

However, the teenage winger would not be denied for long, capitalising on a defensive lapse in the fourth minute to fire Barcelona into an early lead.

Barcelona maintained control and soon doubled their advantage on the night, as Ferran Torres rifled a stunning left-footed strike into the top corner following another costly error at the back, drawing the tie level on aggregate.

The visitors nearly extended their lead moments later when Fermín López headed straight at Musso, with the resulting collision causing a brief stoppage after the midfielder suffered a facial injury.

Atleti, however, responded swiftly. Shortly after play resumed, Lookman was perfectly positioned to slot home a simple finish, a goal that ultimately proved decisive in the tie and further underlined Barcelona’s defensive struggles in the competition.

After the break, Atlético dropped deeper into a compact defensive setup, inviting pressure while looking to exploit spaces on the counter.

Barcelona thought they had regained the advantage when Torres volleyed home, but the effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

As the visitors pushed forward relentlessly, Yamal continued to pose a threat, but clear-cut chances remained scarce.

A crucial point-blank save from Joan García kept Barcelona in contention, before their hopes suffered a major setback when Eric García was sent off late on for a professional foul.

Despite a frantic late onslaught, Barcelona were unable to force extra time, allowing Atlético to extend their remarkable record of progressing from every Champions League knockout tie in which they won the first leg away from home.

For Barcelona, the defeat continues a worrying trend, as they have now been eliminated in seven of their last 10 quarter-final appearances, shifting their focus back to securing the La Liga title.
