Lyon ended a nine-game winless streak in all competitions with a hard-fought 2–0 victory over Lorient at the Groupama Stadium, a result that revived their fading hopes of Champions League qualification.
Once viewed as strong contenders for a top-four finish, Lyon’s poor run of form had seen them slip to seventh place ahead of kick-off.
They were pushed hard by a resilient Lorient side that had lost only twice in their previous 17 league outings.
The first half was tightly contested, with clear chances at a premium. Lyon came close when Roman Yaremchuk sent a header over the bar, while Afonso Moreira tested Lorient goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo with a routine effort.
At the other end, Dominik Greif was called into action to deny Jean-Victor Makengo, before producing a crucial late first-half save to keep out Bamba Dieng from close range, with Arthur Avom also unable to convert the rebound.
After the break, Lyon coach Paulo Fonseca’s triple substitution, introducing Orel Mangala, Endrick and Corentin Tolisso, quickly changed the game’s momentum. Just three minutes into the second half, Yaremchuk broke the deadlock, heading home Endrick’s cross for his first Ligue 1 goal.
Endrick continued to influence proceedings and played a key role in Lyon’s second goal, bursting into the box and forcing a save from Mvogo before Tolisso reacted quickest to nod in the rebound and double the lead.
Lorient pushed for a response, with Dieng missing a one-on-one opportunity and later seeing a VAR-overturned penalty decision go against them after the referee ruled there had been a prior foul on Panos Katseris.
Despite late pressure, including a long-range effort from Avom that Greif tipped away, Lyon stood firm to secure all three points.
The win lifts Lyon back within two points of Lille in third place with five matches remaining, keeping alive their push for a return to the UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 2019/20 season. For Lorient, however, the defeat effectively ends their outside hopes of European qualification.
