Consensus will produce electable candidates, says Iyabo Obasanjo

Former Ogun Central senator, Iyabo Obasanjo, has expressed support for the use of consensus in selecting candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating that the approach helps political parties choose candidates with strong chances of winning.

Obasanjo made this known on Thursday while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, where she dismissed concerns that consensus could override the wishes of party members.

“I do believe that consensus can bring the right candidates because it does not mean leadership ignores the will of the people. It means they consider what the people are saying.

No party wants to lose, so they will not choose candidates that could lead to defeat,” she said.

According to her, political parties are driven by the goal of winning elections and would naturally avoid presenting candidates who lack grassroots appeal.

“So, the consensus is going to favour candidates who can actually win on the ground.

At the end of the day, the party wants victory and will not risk presenting unpopular candidates that could discourage supporters,” she added.

The former lawmaker, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, expressed confidence that the consensus system would work in her favour as she seeks the APC governorship ticket in Ogun State.

She noted that her experience and track record in public service position her as a strong contender in the race.

Obasanjo also reiterated her confidence in her political support base, including within her family.

“I don’t think at this stage I need to consult my parents on every decision, but I know they will support me.

My father and mother will vote for me, even without asking,” she said.

The Electoral Act recognises consensus and direct primaries as methods for selecting candidates within political parties, shaping internal strategies ahead of elections.

Meanwhile, the APC has indicated plans to adopt the consensus approach in selecting its national leadership during its convention scheduled for March 27 to March 28, 2026, in Abuja.
