The Delta State Government has condemned the alleged harassment and sexual assault of women during a festival in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area, describing the incident as unacceptable and ordering security agencies to investigate and bring those responsible to justice.
According to the state government, cultural festivals must not be used as a cover for criminal behaviour, especially acts involving violence against women.
The Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, said the state government strongly condemns the incident.
“The Delta State Government strongly condemns the harassment of ladies and the reported cases of rape during the Ozoro Festival. Such barbaric acts are totally unacceptable and have no place in our society.”
He also directed security agencies to take swift action in identifying and prosecuting those involved.
“We are calling on the police and other security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of these heinous acts and bring them to justice. No individual or group should be allowed to hide under the guise of a festival to perpetrate criminal activities.”
Police reaction
The Delta State Police Command confirmed that investigations were underway following the viral video showing the incident, which sparked widespread outrage.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, described the incident as deeply troubling.
“The incident is alarming, disgusting and embarrassing.”
The police said efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest all individuals involved, adding that some suspects had already been apprehended while investigations continued based on video evidence and eyewitness accounts.
Ongoing investigation
Authorities have assured that the matter will be fully investigated and that all perpetrators will be prosecuted if found culpable.
The state government also reiterated its stance of zero tolerance for gender-based violence and urged community leaders to ensure proper security during public festivals.
