Manchester City saw their Premier League title hopes take a serious blow after being held to a 1–1 draw by relegation-battling West Ham United, leaving them nine points behind leaders Arsenal.
The frustrating result came just days after City’s European ambitions were dented by a heavy defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League, compounding a difficult week for Pep Guardiola’s side.
City looked set to claim all three points when Bernardo Silva gave them the lead in the 31st minute.
The Portuguese midfielder appeared to be aiming a cross towards Erling Haaland, but the ball instead looped over goalkeeper Mads Hermansen and into the net for a fortunate opener.
However, the visitors’ advantage lasted only four minutes. From West Ham’s first corner of the match, delivered by Jarrod Bowen, former Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos rose highest to head home after City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma misjudged his punch.
Guardiola, watching from the stands while serving a touchline suspension following a booking at Newcastle, remained heavily involved by relaying instructions to assistant Pep Lijnders via phone.
City had earlier dominated possession in remarkable fashion, completing 94 passes to West Ham’s seven in the opening 10 minutes.
Yet despite the control, clear chances were scarce. Haaland wasted a good early opportunity when he headed wide from Rayan Aït-Nouri’s delivery.
The Norwegian striker, who has scored frequently against West Ham in the past, endured another difficult outing as his recent dip in form continued, with just three goals in his last 12 league appearances.
City came close to restoring their lead before the break when Haaland squared the ball for Antoine Semenyo, but the forward dragged his shot wide.
Omar Marmoush also fired across goal before being replaced after the hour by Rayan Cherki, while Jérémy Doku was introduced to add attacking spark.
Cherki nearly made an immediate impact when his first involvement set up Haaland, whose low effort was pushed around the post by Hermansen.
The striker’s frustrating night continued when he miscued a close-range attempt after being found by Doku.
Late efforts from Tijjani Reijnders and Marc Guéhi failed to break the deadlock, allowing West Ham to hold on for a valuable point.
The result proved significant at both ends of the table, denting City’s fading title hopes while lifting West Ham out of the relegation zone for the first time since December.
