UCL: Bodo/Glimt crush Sporting 3-0 in first leg

Bodø/Glimt produced a commanding display to defeat Sporting CP 3-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 tie at Aspmyra Stadion.

The Norwegian champions extended their impressive European run with a fifth straight victory in the competition’s proper stage, putting themselves in a strong position ahead of the return leg.

Making their debut in the Champions League last 16 after eliminating defending finalists Inter Milan in the knockout play-off round, Glimt showed little sign of nerves against a Sporting side chasing their first European Cup quarter-final appearance in more than four decades.

The hosts created the first real momentum in the match after an early opportunity for Sporting striker Luis Suárez. Bodø/Glimt gradually took control, with Jens Petter Hauge sending a shot wide before Håkon Evjen was denied in a one-on-one by goalkeeper Rui Silva.

The breakthrough came in the 32nd minute when Georgios Vagiannidis was judged to have pushed down Sondre Brunstad Fet inside the penalty area.

Fet calmly converted the resulting spot-kick, sending Silva the wrong way to give the home side the lead.

Bodø/Glimt doubled their advantage before halftime through Ole Didrik Blomberg, who finished confidently to cap an outstanding first-half performance from coach Kjetil Knutsen’s team.

Sporting attempted to respond after the break, and nearly reduced the deficit when a corner from Luis Guilherme caused chaos in the penalty area.

The ball was flicked on by João Simões and Ousmane Diomande, but Suárez narrowly failed to connect at the far post.

Any hopes of a comeback quickly faded when Kasper Høgh met Hauge’s cross and finished from close range, extending the Norwegian side’s lead to three goals.

Hauge almost added a fourth late in the match, but his long-range effort drifted just wide of the target.

The convincing win leaves Bodø/Glimt on the brink of history, as they aim to become only the second Norwegian club to reach the Champions League quarter-finals since Rosenborg BK achieved the feat during the 1996/97 season.

For Sporting, the heavy defeat leaves their quarter-final hopes hanging by a thread. The Portuguese side has now gone nearly two decades without an away win at this stage or later in European competition, a run stretching back to 2005.
