Two feared dead as communal clash erupts in Adamawa

Two persons are feared dead following renewed violence between the Chobo and Bachaman communities in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The clash, which reportedly occurred on Saturday night, is the latest development in a long-running land dispute between the two communities.

Confirming the incident on Sunday, the spokesperson for the Adamawa State Police Command, SP Suleiman Yahaya-Nguroje, said security operatives had been deployed to the area to restore calm.

According to him, the crisis started after suspected Chobo youths allegedly invaded Lamurde town and began shooting.

“We received a report last night that suspected Chobo youths invaded Lamurde town and were shooting sporadically,” Nguroje said.

He explained that the development prompted youths from the Bachaman community to mobilise and confront the attackers, which escalated the violence.

“The Bachaman youths also mobilised and confronted them. Following the report, heavily armed police personnel were immediately deployed to the area to maintain law and order,” he added.

Nguroje noted that the command had yet to receive a comprehensive casualty report but assured that further updates would be communicated as investigations continue.

“We are yet to receive the full casualty report, but any development regarding that will be communicated immediately,” he stated.

Sources in the community, however, told journalists that the two victims were reportedly killed in the early hours of Sunday while heading to church.
