Mason Greenwood’s early strike helped Marseille bounce back from their Coupe de France disappointment with a 1-0 victory at Toulouse.
After losing a tense penalty shootout at the Velodrome on Wednesday, which saw Toulouse advance to the semifinals, Marseille sought revenge and they got it. Greenwood’s brilliant finish in the 18th minute proved decisive, lifting Marseille back above Lyon into third place in Ligue
1.
The goal came following a swift counter-attack. Igor Paixão drove down the left flank and delivered a precise pass to Greenwood at the edge of the area, who calmly slotted the ball into the top corner.
Marseille continued to press, with Paixão’s effort kept out by Toulouse goalkeeper Guillaume Restes.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also came close, rounding Restes after intercepting a backpass from Cristian Casseres Jr, only to be denied from a tight angle.
Toulouse grew into the game after the break. Santiago Hidalgo narrowly missed, while Yann Gboho saw a powerful right-footed strike crash against the crossbar in the 53rd minute.
A long-range free-kick from Paixão sailed over, and Gerónimo Rulli was alert to save a speculative shot from Pape Diop, ensuring Marseille held on for all three points.
The win moves Habib Beye’s side firmly back into the automatic Champions League spots, giving them a morale boost after their cup setback.
