La Liga: Yamal fires Barcelona to 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao

FC Barcelona relied on teenage sensation Lamine Yamal to grind out a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés on Saturday, with the youngster producing the moment of quality that settled the contest.

The match was fiercely contested, with the hosts repeatedly pushing forward and creating pressure inside their stadium. But the breakthrough eventually came when Yamal swung the game in the visitors’ favour.

The 18-year-old Spain international latched onto a pass from Pedri on the right side of the penalty area.

After taking a touch to create space, he curled a brilliant left-footed effort that clipped the far post on its way in, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

Yamal’s 68th-minute strike ensured Barcelona maintained their lead at the top of La Liga, keeping Hansi Flick’s side four points ahead of rivals Real Madrid as they continue their title defence.

The young forward has been in outstanding form this season, already scoring 19 goals, surpassing the total he managed throughout the previous campaign. He also recently recorded his first league hat trick in Barcelona’s 4–1 victory over Villarreal CF.

Speaking after the match, Pedri praised his teammate’s quality but stressed the importance of continued improvement.

“We know what Lamine is capable of. He placed the ball perfectly where the goalkeeper couldn’t reach it,” Pedri said. “The key for him is not to become satisfied with what he has achieved. He must keep working and giving everything.”

Barcelona’s determined away win came just four days after their Copa del Rey semifinal defeat to Atlético Madrid.

With an important UEFA Champions League last-16 clash against Newcastle United looming on Tuesday, Flick rotated several regular starters.

Pedri, Raphinha and Fermín López began the game on the bench before coming on in the final half hour, while Marcus Rashford, Marc Bernal and Marc Casadó were included in the starting lineup.

Defenders Éric García and João Cancelo also featured from the start as Barcelona coped with injuries to full-backs Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde.

Before Yamal’s decisive strike, Barcelona had to rely on goalkeeper Joan García, who produced key saves to keep the hosts at bay and preserve a clean sheet.
