Diddy to leave prison six weeks earlier after sentence review

Rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs is now scheduled for an earlier release from prison following an adjustment to his sentence, as he continues to challenge his conviction in court.

According to records from the United States Federal Bureau of Prisons, Combs’ release date has been moved forward by about six weeks. He is now expected to regain his freedom on April 25, 2028, instead of the previously projected June 4, 2028.

The 56-year-old music executive is currently serving a 50-month sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Fort Dix, New Jersey, after being convicted on two counts of transporting individuals for prostitution. He was, however, cleared of racketeering and sex trafficking allegations — charges that could have resulted in a much longer prison term.

The adjustment to his release timeline followed his admission into the Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP), a rehabilitation initiative that allows eligible inmates to qualify for sentence reductions.

A representative for Combs confirmed his participation in the programme, saying, “Mr. Combs is actively involved in the Residential Drug Abuse Program and has embraced the opportunity for rehabilitation. He is committed to personal growth and focused on becoming a better version of himself.”

Combs’ projected release date had previously fluctuated. It was initially set for May 8, 2028, before being pushed to June 4, 2028, after prison authorities cited alleged infractions. Reports at the time claimed he consumed improvised alcohol and took part in an unauthorised three-way phone call.

His legal team disputed parts of those allegations, particularly claims surrounding the phone call. A spokesperson said, “The communication in question falls under attorney-client privilege. Mr. Combs remains focused on self-improvement and adjusting to his environment.”

The founder of Bad Boy Records has reportedly taken up duties within the prison’s laundry unit and recently marked his 56th birthday while in custody.

In a letter written before sentencing, Combs reflected on his conduct and expressed remorse. “I lost my way and take responsibility for my actions,” he wrote. “I have been humbled by this experience and am determined to grow from it.”

Meanwhile, his legal battle continues. In December, he filed an appeal seeking either immediate release or a reduced sentence, arguing that prosecutors failed to sufficiently establish key elements of the charges and that his punishment was excessive. Federal prosecutors have since opposed the appeal.

Combs has been in custody since his arrest in September 2024. While speculation has emerged about the possibility of a presidential pardon, no official action has been announced.

As the appeal process unfolds, the revised release date marks the latest development in the high-profile case surrounding the embattled music mogul.
