Nigeria’s leading bleach brand, Hypo Bleach, has issued a public notice warning against a disturbing trend on social media that falsely portrays its product as a beverage.
The company emphasized that Hypo Bleach is strictly for cleaning purposes, formulated to remove stains, whiten fabrics, deodorize, and kill 99.9% of germs.
“It is not a drink,” the notice stated. “It is not something to consume for the sake of trends.”
In recent weeks, videos and AI-generated images making Hypo appear like a consumable beverage have circulated online, raising serious safety concerns. The company condemned such content, noting the risk to public health.
In a statement issued by the company, the Marketing Manager, Adebayo Adeyemo, said, “Your reach is real. So is your responsibility. A trend that ends in ill-health is not a trend worth starting.” He urged influencers, bloggers, and content creators to be mindful of the impact of their content on audiences, particularly young Nigerians.
The statement also carried a message for young people, “You do not have to prove anything to anyone. Not online. Not offline. Not ever. If someone is pressuring you to try this, that is not a dare. That is harm.”
Hypo Bleach further encouraged Nigerians to prioritize mental health, urging those struggling emotionally to seek help from guardians, counselors, or healthcare professionals.
The company concluded with a call to keep social media both fun and safe.
