Habib Beye celebrated his first win as Olympique de Marseille manager after a thrilling late turnaround saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang score twice to secure a 3-2 comeback against Olympique Lyonnais in Ligue 1.
Following their 13-match winning streak being snapped by RC Strasbourg in the previous fixture, Paulo Fonseca’s Lyon squad arrived at the Stade Vélodrome eager to bounce back and they made a dream start.
Just three minutes in, Endrick’s precise pass on the edge of the area found Corentin Tolisso, who calmly slotted home for his third goal in as many games.
Marseille quickly regrouped, creating several chances. Mason Greenwood saw a pair of strikes expertly saved by Dominik Greif, while Endrick himself almost doubled Lyon’s lead, sending a solo just over the crossbar.
Roman Yaremchuk also squandered a golden opportunity, failing to convert a one-on-one with Geronimo Rulli.
At halftime, Beye injected fresh energy by bringing on Igor Paixao, and the Brazilian forward made an instant impact, curling a stunning long-range strike into the top corner to level the score.
Marseille pressed on, with Greenwood and Aubameyang both missing good opportunities in the box, but Lyon capitalized on their profligacy in the 76th minute when substitute Remi Himbert fired a low finish past Rulli to restore the visitors’ lead.
The drama wasn’t over. Just five minutes later, Paixao delivered a pinpoint cross that Aubameyang turned home to set up a heart-stopping finale.
Both teams threw men forward in search of a winner, but it was Marseille who had the last laugh. In stoppage time, Aubameyang completed his brace, tapping in Ethan Nwaneri’s cut-back to spark wild celebrations among the home fans.
The Gabonese striker’s late heroics ensured Lyon left Marseille empty-handed, ending the hosts’ four-game winless run in style and bringing them within two points of Fonseca’s side in the Ligue 1 standings.
