Inter sink Genoa 2-0, extend Serie A lead

Inter Milan strengthened their grip atop Serie A, moving 13 points clear after a comfortable 2-0 victory against struggling Genoa at the San Siro on Saturday.

Goals from Federico Dimarco and Hakan Calhanoglu secured the win, marking Inter’s eighth consecutive league triumph.

The Nerazzurri opened the scoring in the 31st minute when Dimarco fired a stunning volley into the far corner from a tight angle on the left, expertly set up by Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s lofted pass.

Calhanoglu put the game beyond doubt in the 70th minute, converting a penalty after Genoa substitute Alexsandro Amorim handled the ball in the box.

Genoa nearly offered a late scare in stoppage time when Amorim set up Leo Ostigard, but his long-range effort was comfortably stopped by goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

The victory comes on the back of Inter’s disappointing Champions League playoff exit, where they suffered a 5-2 aggregate defeat to Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt earlier in the week.

Dimarco reflected on the team’s resilience, telling Sky Sport Italia, “It’s never easy to bounce back after a loss, but Inter always find a way to respond. Today was another example of that.”

With 67 points from 27 matches, Inter now look to maintain their momentum as they prepare for the Milan derby next weekend.

Sommer emphasized the importance of the remaining fixtures, “The gap at the top gives us some breathing room, but there are still 11 games left. The derby will be crucial, and we want to get the win this time.”

Meanwhile, AC Milan will aim to keep their slim title hopes alive when they travel to face relegation-threatened Cremonese on Sunday.
