Fire razes shops in Kano market

An early morning fire on Friday ravaged multiple shops at the Kwalemar Fatima Simra Market in Dakata, Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

The incident comes just days after a mysterious fire consumed parts of Singer Market, a popular hub for essential commodities, which burned for over 48 hours.

Confirming the development, the Chairman of the market’s fire committee, Dauda Haruna, said about 50 shops had been destroyed, with the fire still ongoing.

He explained that most of the affected shops belonged to small-scale businesses engaged in peanut oil refining, as well as plastic and rubber recycling.

Haruna added that market officials promptly informed the relevant agencies once the fire was noticed.

“From what we saw initially, about 50 shops have already been gutted, and the fire is still burning. We are still waiting for the Kano State Fire Service to arrive.

“We did our best to call them and inform them of the situation. I can even hear their vehicles now,” Haruna said.

At the time of reporting, the full extent of the damage remained unclear.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Fire Service had not issued any official statement on the fire, and repeated attempts to reach their spokesperson, Saminu Yusif, were unsuccessful.
