Ash Wednesday: CAN urges unity, policy action

The Christian Association of Nigeria has urged Nigerians and leaders at all levels to embrace unity, inclusive governance and effective implementation of policies as Christians mark Ash Wednesday.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its President, Daniel Okoh, the association said the Lenten season provides a moment for sober reflection on the nation’s condition and the responsibilities of both leaders and citizens in shaping the country’s future.

The group observed that Nigeria is currently grappling with serious economic and social pressures, noting that many families are burdened by rising living costs, limited job opportunities and ongoing insecurity in several parts of the country.

“Nigeria is going through a difficult phase, with many households facing economic strain, uncertain employment prospects and persistent security concerns,” the statement said.

“These realities demand practical solutions, responsible leadership and collective commitment from all stakeholders.”

CAN stressed that while Nigeria has numerous public policies, the real challenge lies in translating them into tangible benefits for citizens.

“We urge leaders across all tiers of government to move beyond policy formulation and ensure effective implementation that directly improves the lives of Nigerians,” the association said.

“Policies must be carried out fairly, transparently and in ways that bring real relief to the people.”

The body also called for governance that reflects Nigeria’s diversity, urging authorities to ensure that government programmes reach communities, young people and vulnerable households.

Addressing citizens, CAN warned against divisive rhetoric and misinformation, encouraging Nigerians to promote peaceful coexistence despite differences in religion, ethnicity and culture.

“We encourage citizens to reject division, violence and the spread of false information,” the statement added.

“National stability depends on cooperation among religious communities and responsible civic conduct.”

The association further appealed to young Nigerians to channel their energy into innovation, productivity and constructive engagement in national development.

“As we observe Ash Wednesday, may this season renew our shared commitment to justice, compassion and responsible citizenship,” the statement said, adding that Nigeria’s progress ultimately depends on the combined efforts of both leaders and the people.
