Oyo CAN urges churches to strengthen security amid rising kidnappings

The Oyo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria has called on churches across the state to adopt stricter security measures in response to the increasing cases of abduction and kidnapping.

The directive was contained in a communiqué issued on Wednesday in Ibadan and jointly signed by the state CAN Chairman, Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, and the Secretary, Very Rev. Samuel Owolabi.

According to the association, churches should enhance security around their premises by deploying trained personnel and installing surveillance equipment where necessary.

“Considering the growing incidents of kidnapping and abduction, churches must become more security-conscious by positioning security personnel strategically and making use of electronic security devices within and around their premises,” the communiqué stated.

CAN also advised churches to suspend late-night physical activities until the security situation improves.

The association urged congregations to intensify prayers for victims currently in captivity while taking practical steps to safeguard worshippers.

It further recommended that churches without perimeter fences or gates should prioritise such projects to improve security.

“Church leaders should ensure that trained security personnel are on duty, especially during worship services, and conduct proper security assessments of guards and other staff engaged in essential services,” the association said.

The Christian body also cautioned churches against allowing unknown persons to lodge within church auditoriums or premises.

Beyond churches, CAN advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and late-night journeys during the period. It also encouraged compliance with the state government’s directive restricting commercial motorcycle operations after 10:30 p.m.

Expressing concern over the worsening security challenges in parts of the state, the association sympathised with families whose loved ones remain in the custody of kidnappers.

CAN, however, acknowledged efforts by both the Oyo State and Federal Governments to secure the release of abducted persons, particularly those linked to recent incidents in Orire Local Government Area.

The association urged authorities to intensify efforts to rescue all victims and reunite them with their families as quickly as possible.

“Government should take urgent steps to secure the release of those still in captivity and ensure they are safely reunited with their loved ones,” the communiqué added.

The body also called for caution in the public dissemination of sensitive security information, noting that such information should be managed responsibly.

CAN reaffirmed its commitment to working with government authorities and other stakeholders to promote peace, security and stability across Oyo State.
