315 students, 12 teachers abducted from Niger catholic school, say CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria in Niger State has confirmed that 315 people — comprising 303 students and 12 teachers — were abducted when armed men invaded St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary School, Papiri, in Agwarra LGA.

The attack occurred in the early hours of November 21, with initial estimates placing the number of abductees at 227.

However, following a comprehensive headcount, CAN says the figures are significantly higher.

In a revised statement, Bulus Yohanna, the CAN chairman in Niger State and Catholic Bishop of the Kontagora Diocese, said the updated figure emerged after a thorough verification.

“After leaving the school, we made calls and enquiries on those we initially thought had escaped, only to discover that 88 more students were captured while attempting to flee,” Yohanna explained.

According to CAN, the school has a total population of 629 pupils and students — 430 in the primary school and 199 in the secondary section.

CAN Denies Prior Warnings, Dismisses ‘Propaganda’ Claims

Responding to reports that the school had been warned ahead of the incident, Yohanna insisted that no such communication was received from the government or security agencies.

“We did not receive any circular or warning,” he said. “Back in 2022, when there were rumours of security threats, we shut down immediately without waiting for government directives.”

He also refuted allegations circulating on social media suggesting that some reverend sisters travelled to Abuja in connection with the incident.

“Those claims are unfounded. Anyone making such allegations must provide evidence,” he stated.

In a statement issued by Daniel Atori, spokesperson to the bishop, CAN assured parents and the public that efforts are ongoing in collaboration with security agencies to secure the victims’ release.

“We call on everyone to remain calm and prayerful as we continue to work with all relevant authorities for the quick and safe return of our children and teachers,” Yohanna added.
