American actor, James Van Der Beek, the soft-eyed performer whose boyish charm and sincerity made him a global star in the 1990s teen drama Dawson’s Creek, has died at the age of 48.
He passed away on Wednesday, according to a statement shared on his verified Instagram page.
“He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace,” the statement said. “There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
His representative, Whitney Tancred, also confirmed the news to CNN.
Van Der Beek revealed in November 2024 that he had been diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer.
Following his death, his wife Kimberly, mother of their six children, shared a GoFundMe link on social media, appealing for assistance after the prolonged illness placed the family under severe financial pressure.
“The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds,” the campaign page states. “They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time.”
Born in 1977 in Cheshire, Connecticut, Van Der Beek was the eldest of three children. His passion for acting emerged in middle school, and by 15, he told his mother he wanted to audition professionally.
“She didn’t hold me back,” he once recounted. “She took me to NYC, and she walked me through it.”
His early career included an off-Broadway role in Finding the Sun, followed by an academic scholarship to Drew University in New Jersey. He later appeared in films such as Angus (1995) and I Love You, I Love You Not, starring Claire Danes.
After taking a break from college to travel, he auditioned for what would become his breakout role, Dawson Leery in Dawson’s Creek. Although the character was written as a 15-year-old, Van Der Beek was already 20 at the time.
Speaking to Larry King, he once admitted he initially dismissed the role.
“Then they called me back and wanted to fly me out here to test in LA, at which point I read the script and really loved it,” he said.
He later learned that some executives were unsure about casting him, but series creator Kevin Williamson strongly supported him.
Van Der Beek recalled Williamson saying, “Listen, I created this guy, I know this guy, this kid is this guy!”
Dawson’s Creek ran for six seasons from 1998 to 2003 and also launched the careers of Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson and Michelle Williams.
Beyond television, Van Der Beek starred in films including Varsity Blues (1999), Texas Rangers (2001) and The Rules of Attraction (2002). He also competed in Season 28 of Dancing with the Stars in 2019.
The cast of Dawson’s Creek remained close over the years and most recently reunited for a charity event in New York. Van Der Beek had planned to attend but withdrew due to a stomach illness, joining virtually instead.
“I have been looking forward to this night for months and months ever since my angel Michelle Williams said she was putting it together,” he said in a video message. “I can’t believe I’m not there.”
Tributes quickly poured in after news of his passing.
Co-star Busy Philipps wrote that Van Der Beek was “one in a billion and he will be forever missed.”
“I am just so so sad,” she said. “He was my friend and i loved him and i’m so grateful for our friendship all these years.”
His Dancing with the Stars partner Emma Slater also paid tribute.
“is and will always be family to me.”
“Love you so much James. The man that you are, you can be proud of,” she wrote. “So grateful that I got to be there to say goodbye to you.”
Actress Stacy Kiebler described him as “a gift,” recalling a visit during his final days.
“In these past days, you taught me more about being present than any book ever could,” she wrote. “Your presence was a bright light in my life, and in so many others. And while your physical body may no longer be here, I know your spirit is doing big things. I feel it already.”
Director Kevin Smith also reflected on their collaborations in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001) and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019).
“James didn’t just lend us his name and celebrity, he came to PLAY, making memorable moments in forgettable films,” Smith wrote. “One of the best things you can do for a person is dream their dreams with or for them – so I’ll always remember #jamesvanderbeek as the generous, funny, warm, self-effacing superstar who twice helped me make my dreams come true, 18 years apart.”
In recent months, Van Der Beek had been open about the toll his illness took on his family, even auctioning memorabilia from Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues to help with expenses.
On his 48th birthday last March, he shared a heartfelt message about facing mortality and redefining his sense of self.
“If I am just a too-skinny weak guy alone in an apartment with cancer, what am I? And I meditated and the answer came through, I am worthy of God‘s love, simply because I exist,” he said. “And if I’m worthy of God‘s love, shouldn’t I also be worthy of my own? And the same is true for you.”
