The Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State has refuted reports suggesting that a new Oniko of Ikolaje Idiroko has been chosen, stressing that the official selection procedure is still underway.
In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by the council’s Secretary, Johnson Babajide, the local government clarified that the throne remains vacant following the death of Oba John Olakunle Ojo JP (Afiditi II).
According to Babajide, the public should disregard claims that anyone has been appointed or crowned at this stage.
“No election has taken place, and no candidate has been selected, elected, or declared as the new Oniko of Ikolaje Idiroko at this time,” the statement read.
He added that the local government is committed to “full compliance with all necessary protocols.”
The council explained that, based on the rotational arrangement guiding the kingship, the Odunfa Ruling House conducted its nomination exercise on February 4, 2026.
The process—which took place at the council secretariat—was supervised by government officials, security personnel, and family representatives.
Three princes were put forward as nominees:
Prince Olagoriye Jonah Ariori, Prince Sunday Adekanmbi Olayode, and Prince Olabowale Ade.
With nominations completed, the next step is for the Ikolaje Idiroko Council of Kingmakers (Afobaje) to meet and perform its traditional responsibility of selecting one candidate.
The council issued a strong warning against any premature claims to the throne.
“Any individual or group parading themselves or any candidate as the appointed or crowned Oniko before the formal conclusion of the process does so unlawfully,” it cautioned.
Such actions, it added, “may lead to breach of peace, public disorder, or violation of the law.”
Residents, ruling house members, candidates, and supporters were urged to remain calm while the lawful procedure runs its course.
