Manchester United’s resurgence under interim manager Michael Carrick continued on Saturday as they secured a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, leaving Spurs’ woes deepening under Thomas Frank.
Goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes sealed the triumph at Old Trafford.
Since Carrick’s appointment, the Red Devils have been on a remarkable run, following wins against Manchester City, Arsenal, and Fulham.
The latest result extended that momentum and marked United’s first league victory over Tottenham since 2022.
The match turned decisively in United’s favor when Tottenham captain Romero was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Casemiro in the 29th minute.
The dismissal left Spurs reshuffled, and just nine minutes later, Mbeumo opened the scoring from a well-executed corner routine.
Kobbie Mainoo met a low Fernandes delivery at the near post, setting up Mbeumo to finish through a crowded box to delight the Old Trafford faithful.
United dominated the remainder of the game. Vicario made several fine saves to keep Spurs in contention, denying Casemiro, Luke Shaw, and Diogo Dalot, while close-range efforts from Amad Diallo were ruled offside.
However, the visitors could not withstand the pressure. In the 81st minute, Dalot’s cross found Fernandes, who calmly directed it home to make it 2-0.
Tottenham, already battling a seven-match winless streak in the Premier League, were further hampered by injuries, with Destiny Udogie limping off to be replaced by teenage debutant Souza.
Romero faces a four-match ban, leaving Frank under increased scrutiny as Spurs prepare to host Newcastle midweek.
Old Trafford marked the 68th anniversary of the Munich air disaster with solemnity, and despite the occasion, the atmosphere was electric as United continued to ride the wave of Carrick’s rejuvenation.
Substitute Benjamin Sesko and Tyler Fletcher, one of former caretaker Darren Fletcher’s twin sons, saw late action as the game drew to a close.
With a fifth successive league win within reach at West Ham on Tuesday, United fans can dream of sustained revival, while Tottenham must regroup after a night that underscored both disciplinary and injury setbacks.
