Fulham manager, Marco Silva, has explained why Calvin Bassey has not featured regularly since returning from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Bassey has been one of Fulham’s key performers over the past two seasons and was even named the club’s best player last term.
He started this season strongly, forming a solid partnership with Joachim Andersen at centre-back before joining Nigeria’s Super Eagles for AFCON, where he was outstanding.
Although there were concerns his absence would hurt Fulham, the team went on a strong run. Jorge Cuenca, who replaced him, impressed and built a strong understanding with Andersen.
Many expected Bassey to reclaim his spot upon returning, but he has yet to start a game this season.
Against Brighton, he stayed on the bench for 90 minutes, and last weekend against Manchester United, he played only five minutes.
When asked about the situation, Silva said, “It’s a great thing for the team. I am the first one praising Calvin’s impact at the club, a great, great centre back. Huge potential to keep growing.
“Cuenca has stepped in and shown his qualities. It’s a competition, Cuenca knows the pro he’s up against.”
Fulham will face Everton at Craven Cottage on Sunday, and it remains unclear whether Silva will continue with Cuenca or return Bassey to the starting lineup.
