Fulham begin Bassey contract talks amid Inter interest

Fulham are preparing to open negotiations with Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey over a new long-term contract as the Premier League club looks to fend off interest from Italian giants Inter Milan.

Bassey has established himself as an important member of the Fulham squad since joining the club from Ajax in July 2023 on a four-year contract.

The 26-year-old has made 105 appearances for the Cottagers in all competitions, scoring four goals and registering one assist during his time at Craven Cottage.

Although his current deal is set to run until the summer of 2027, Fulham have the option to extend the agreement by another year, which would keep the Nigerian at the club until 2028.

That extension option gives Fulham some breathing room as they consider Bassey’s long-term future, but the club is nevertheless keen to reward his contributions with a fresh deal.

Bassey’s ability to operate both as a centre-back and left-back has made him a valuable asset.

He was named Fulham’s Player of the Season for the 2024/25 campaign and has continued to feature regularly under new head coach Álvaro Arbeloa.

His strength, pace and quality on the left side have further cemented his place in the squad this season.

According to TEAMtalk, discussions over a new contract are expected to commence soon, with Fulham remaining confident about their position despite continued interest from Serie A.

Inter Milan have reportedly tracked Bassey across several transfer windows, with the Italian club attracted by his experience in the Premier League and his qualities as a left-footed defender.

However, Bassey is believed to be settled in west London and happy with life at Fulham.

He is also reportedly receptive to extending his stay if the club can agree suitable terms with him.

For Fulham, retaining Bassey would provide stability at the back while also protecting the club’s financial interests.

Although activating the existing extension would give them additional security, agreeing a new long-term contract remains their preferred option.

The defender’s importance has become even more pronounced following Fulham’s difficult start to the campaign. The Cottagers have lost their opening three league matches and are joint-bottom of the Premier League table.

With the club seeking to turn its fortunes around, keeping established players such as Bassey is likely to be an important part of their plans for the remainder of the season.
