UCL: João Pedro’s brace hands Chelsea Last-16 spot

João Pedro emerged as Chelsea’s hero, scoring twice in the second half to inspire a stunning 3-2 comeback over Napoli at the Diego Maradona Stadium, securing the Blues a place in the Champions League last 16.

Chelsea looked on the verge of a costly defeat, with poor away form in Europe threatening to continue. Rasmus Hojlund’s late first-half strike had given Napoli the lead, leaving Chelsea facing a potential third loss in four away fixtures.

To counter Napoli’s attacking setup, Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior deployed an unconventional three-at-the-back formation, placing Reece James and Marc Cucurella in central defensive roles. The gamble initially seemed promising.

Chelsea took an early lead when Enzo Fernandez calmly converted a penalty, following James’s free-kick that was controversially handled by Napoli’s Juan Jesus in the wall. However, the advantage was short-lived.

The 23-year-old Napoli academy graduate Antonio Vergara scored his first senior goal on his sixth appearance, stunning the Blues and energizing the home crowd. Napoli then extended their lead through Hojlund, exploiting open spaces around Chelsea’s restructured defense.

Chelsea’s attacking options were limited after Cole Palmer, who had missed the previous win at Crystal Palace and is reportedly considering a return to Manchester, remained on the bench.

The Blues appeared to struggle to assert control in midfield against a growing Napoli threat.

After the interval, Rosenior introduced Palmer to inject creativity, but it was Pedro who stole the show. He first equalized with a sublime 25-yard strike into the top corner, a moment of brilliance that turned the tide.

Eight minutes from full time, Pedro outpaced the Napoli defense to score the decisive goal, completing a remarkable turnaround.

Chelsea’s late dominance reflected their resilience and tactical adjustment. Pedro’s heroics not only salvaged the game but also ensured the Blues’ smooth passage into the knockout stages of Europe’s elite competition.
