Manchester City returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a controlled 2-0 victory over Wolves at the Etihad Stadium, ending a frustrating spell and regaining momentum at a crucial stage of the season.
Goals from Omar Marmoush and Semenyo secured the three points and underlined Pep Guardiola’s squad depth.
After failing to win any of their previous four league matches, Guardiola opted for rotation, leaving Erling Haaland and Phil Foden on the bench.
The decision reflected the manager’s trust in his wider squad and willingness to rely on alternative attacking options. By the time both stars entered in the second half, City had already established control.
Early Pressure Pays Off
Wolves set up defensively in a five-man block, hoping to frustrate the home side. But City dominated from the outset, moving the ball quickly across the pitch and probing for gaps in the opposition’s compact shape.
Debutant Marc Guehi almost made an instant impact, rising at the back post within five minutes to meet a cross, only to see his header comfortably saved by Jose Sa. The effort, however, signaled City’s intent to break Wolves down.
Moments later, City struck. Marmoush reacted swiftly to a whipped cross from Matheus Nunes, poking the ball home from close range to open the scoring. The goal not only gave City an early advantage but also marked Marmoush’s first Premier League goal of the season.
City Break Through Before Half-Time
Wolves briefly threatened a response, with Semenyo’s first-time strike being smothered by Sa, but City’s dominance remained unshaken. Bernardo Silva orchestrated the move that led to the second goal, threading a perfect pass to Semenyo at the edge of the area.
The forward finished calmly, doubling the lead and effectively putting the result beyond doubt before the break.
Squad Depth Shines
Guardiola’s decision to bring on Haaland and Foden in the second half came after the game was largely secured.
Semenyo continued to trouble Wolves’ defence, even rattling the crossbar as City pushed for a third. Wolves had a late scare when Yerson Mosquera’s flicked header struck the woodwork, but City’s control remained largely unchallenged.
For Wolves, the season remains dire. Rob Edwards’ side have managed just one win so far and sit 14 points from safety, with gaps in quality particularly evident in the final third.
For Manchester City, the 2-0 victory may not have been the most spectacular, but it was significant. It restored confidence, showcased the squad’s depth, and demonstrated Guardiola’s ability to rotate his team while still securing results in the Premier League.
