UCL: Newcastle beat PSV 3-0, move closer to Round of 16

Newcastle edged closer to securing a spot in the Champions League last 16 by capitalizing on PSV Eindhoven’s defensive lapses in a commanding 3-0 win at St James’ Park on Wednesday.

Yoane Wissa, making his first Champions League start, and Anthony Gordon struck within the opening 30 minutes after the Dutch side’s mistakes left them exposed.

Harvey Barnes sealed the victory with his fifth goal in as many games shortly after the hour mark.

The triumph, however, was overshadowed by a worrying ankle injury to captain Bruno Guimarães, who was forced off just before half-time.

His absence could prove costly as Eddie Howe’s side prepare for a tough trip to Paris Saint-Germain next week in the final group-stage match, needing a win to guarantee progression without going through the play-off round.

Wissa repaid Howe’s confidence in starting him ahead of Nick Woltemade by converting Joelinton’s pass following a poor clearance from PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovar.

German referee Daniel Siebert reviewed the goal but confirmed it, ruling that Wissa had not interfered with play from an offside position.

Despite dominating domestically with a 16-point lead atop the Eredivisie, PSV have struggled for consistency in Europe.

Their troubles continued when Yarek Gasiorowski’s sloppy backpass allowed Wissa to set up Gordon for an easy tap-in, giving the England international six goals in this year’s Champions League—trailing only Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane in the scoring charts.

The match took a sour turn for Newcastle when Guimarães collided with Kovar at a corner, requiring lengthy treatment before being substituted.

Howe’s midfield and defensive options were already stretched thin by injuries and a demanding schedule, though he remains well-stocked up front, with Barnes in scintillating form.

The 28-year-old finished off the game with his 12th goal of the season, exploiting PSV’s static defense 25 minutes from time.

With this result, Newcastle are among five Premier League sides currently in the top eight, keeping English hopes alive in Europe’s premier club competition.
