Kane fires Bayern Munich to UCL knockouts

Harry Kane scored twice but also missed a penalty as 10-man Bayern Munich defeated Union Saint-Gilloise 2–0 to book their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

The victory leaves Vincent Kompany’s side second in the table with 18 points from seven matches.

Bayern now trail leaders Arsenal by three points and sit five clear of Barcelona, who lead a cluster of teams battling just outside the top eight automatic qualification places.

Belgian champions Union Saint-Gilloise remain 31st on six points, two shy of the top-24 playoff spots, with a decisive clash against Serie A outfit Atalanta awaiting them next week.

David Hubert’s team put up a stubborn defensive display for much of the contest before Kane finally broke the deadlock early in the second half, rising highest to head home Michael Olise’s corner.

The England captain doubled Bayern’s advantage just three minutes later, calmly converting a penalty he won himself to take his tally to 35 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions this season.

Bayern were reduced to 10 men shortly after the hour mark when Kim Min-jae was sent off for a second yellow card, but Union failed to make their numerical superiority count.

Instead, the hosts pushed for a third goal. Kane struck the crossbar with another spot kick, while Olise wasted a golden chance by blasting over from close range.

Reflecting on his missed penalty, Kane said: “I tried to whip it quickly into the far corner but put a bit too much on it. I’ll learn more from that miss than the penalties I’ve scored already this season.”

The result extends Bayern’s remarkable home record in the competition, with the German giants now unbeaten in 38 Champions League group or league-phase matches at home.

Their last such defeat came against Manchester City in December 2013.

Bayern have also suffered just one defeat in all competitions this season — an away loss to Arsenal in November.

“It feels great to be here,” Kane added. “The team, the work ethic, the way we train every day — everyone is pulling in the same direction. We’re one big unit.”
