Luis Suárez struck twice as Sporting CP produced a dramatic 2-1 upset of Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League at a vibrant Estádio José Alvalade.
Despite controlling much of the contest, the reigning champions were repeatedly frustrated, seeing three goals ruled out across both halves.
Sporting, however, made their chances count late on, with Suárez emerging as the decisive figure.
PSG dominated possession early and went close through Nuno Mendes, whose angled effort was pushed away by Rui Silva. The visitors continued to press, with Vitinha firing narrowly wide and Marquinhos twice missing the target with headers.
Sporting offered occasional threats on the break, Geny Catamo brushing the side-netting before Senny Mayulu’s header was saved.
Rui Silva then intervened again to deny Bradley Barcola, while VAR twice came to the hosts’ rescue. Warren Zaïre-Emery’s header from Fabian Ruiz’s cross was disallowed for a foul in the build-up, and a later Nuno Mendes finish was ruled out after Ousmane Dembélé was penalised for handball.
The Portuguese side nearly stunned PSG before the interval when Hidemasa Morita sliced over from close range.
The pattern remained the same after the restart. PSG thought they had finally broken through when Dembélé headed home, only for the offside flag to intervene.
Rui Silva continued to frustrate the visitors, denying a close-range effort from the Ballon d’Or winner, while Désiré Doué fired over.
Luis Enrique turned to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Gonçalo Ramos in search of inspiration, but it was Sporting who struck first.
A partially cleared corner fell kindly for Suárez, who was left unmarked to slot home in the 74th minute for his 21st goal of the season.
Kvaratskhelia responded almost immediately, curling a superb strike into the far top corner to restore parity.
However, PSG’s relief was short-lived. In the dying moments, Lucas Chevalier could only parry Francisco Trincão’s effort into danger, allowing Suárez to rise unchallenged and nod in a dramatic winner on the stroke of full time.
The victory lifts Sporting to 13 points, level with PSG and just one place behind them in sixth, with one league-phase fixture remaining.
