Family suspends burial plans for late gospel singer Omije Ojumi

Burial arrangements for popular gospel singer, Bunmi Akinnaanu, widely known as Omije Ojumi, have been suspended following unresolved disagreements within her family.

The decision was announced on Saturday by fellow gospel musician, Lanre Alewilese, who said the move was taken after consultations between the family and the burial planning committee.

“All plans and arrangements for the burial of our late sister and colleague have been cancelled for now,” Alewilese said.

“This decision became necessary because of issues arising from within the family.”

Before the suspension, activities were scheduled to take place in Lagos, including a service of songs, candlelight procession and tribute night on January 20 at the LTV 8 Grounds, Ikeja.

A private interment for family members and close associates had also been fixed for January 21.

In a follow-up message, Alewilese stressed that the action was not his personal choice but a collective resolution.

“This is the conclusion of the family and the burial committee,” he said.

“The programmes earlier announced for Tuesday and Wednesday have been put on hold. The family will communicate a new decision to the public in due course.”

Akinnaanu died on January 12, 2026, at a hospital in Lagos. Her death was earlier confirmed in a statement released on behalf of the family by gospel singer, Ayo Melody.

“With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnaanu Adeoye, fondly called Omije Ojumi. May God grant her eternal rest,” the statement read.

Fondly called Omije Ojumi after her popular gospel track, Akinnaanu began singing at a young age and later resigned from the banking sector to pursue gospel music full-time.

A video that surfaced online in October 2025 showed the singer receiving prayers during a church service in Ibadan over an undisclosed ailment.

However, the family has not linked the condition to her death.

The family is expected to announce fresh burial arrangements at a later date.
