EPL: Arsenal, Nottingham Forest play goalless draw

Arsenal missed a golden opportunity to strengthen their grip on the Premier League title as they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The Gunners arrived at the City Ground buoyed by news of Manchester City’s defeat to Manchester United, which had presented them with the chance to open a nine-point gap at the top.

Yet, like their goalless encounter with Liverpool nine days ago, Mikel Arteta’s side failed to capitalise, leaving fans to ponder what might have been.

Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, Arsenal could not find the breakthrough.

Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka came close, but neither could convert, leaving the Gunners with a slightly inflated seven-point advantage at the summit, a lead that could shrink to four if Aston Villa defeat Everton on Sunday.

While Arsenal remain favourites to lift their first Premier League trophy since 2004, the draw is a reminder of past disappointments.

In April 2023, the Gunners famously squandered an eight-point lead over City to ultimately fall short.

For Nottingham Forest, the point is a welcome boost. Sean Dyche’s side, five points above the relegation zone, showed resilience and organisation from the outset.

Nicolas Dominguez’s early effort was blocked by Declan Rice, while Callum Hudson-Odoi narrowly missed connecting with Murillo’s through-ball in the first 20 minutes.

Forest even threatened themselves, with defender Murillo redeeming a mistake to deny Viktor Gyökeres a clear chance in the 40th minute.

Arsenal responded with sustained pressure, including a moment before half-time when Martinelli somehow directed Noni Madueke’s volley wide from close range.

Arteta made multiple changes after the break, introducing Saka, Gabriel Jesus, and Mikel Merino to inject fresh energy. Saka immediately influenced proceedings, linking up with Rice for a shot that was comfortably saved by Matz Sels.

Later, Saka’s header was tipped around the post by the Forest goalkeeper, and another Merino header went narrowly wide. A VAR check for a potential penalty after Ola Aina’s handball proved fruitless for the visitors.

Despite Arsenal’s relentless pressure, Forest held firm, earning a deserved point in a match that had significant implications for both the title race and the relegation battle.
