French Cup: Greenwood bags hattrick as Marseille humiliate Bayeux 9-0

Olympique de Marseille made history in the French Cup with a staggering 9-0 demolition of Bayeux, powered by a sensational display from Mason Greenwood.

The victory sent a clear signal to the competition: Marseille are serious contenders for the trophy this season.

Facing a sixth-division side for the first time in club history, Roberto De Zerbi’s men wasted no time asserting their dominance.

From the opening whistle, Marseille’s attacking intent was unmistakable, leaving Bayeux little chance to replicate their remarkable run through the regional rounds.

Greenwood Sparks Early Fire
Marseille struck in the 13th minute when Greenwood played a precise ball down the right flank to Amir Murillo, whose cross was met by Angel Gomes, arriving late into the box to open the scoring.

From that point, Bayeux’s resistance crumbled. Hamed Junior Traoré capitalized on a goalkeeper error to double the lead, before Greenwood himself added a third with a powerful left-footed finish on a flowing counterattack. Amine Gouiri rounded off the first-half onslaught with a fourth goal, leaving the visitors overwhelmed.

A Hat-Trick and Unstoppable Momentum
The second half saw no mercy from Marseille. Greenwood scored again after a defensive lapse, then set up Gouiri for the sixth.

Despite losing Gomes to injury after his opener, the hosts continued to dominate. CJ Egan-Riley headed in a seventh goal from a Greenwood corner, Neal Maupay broke his scoring drought with the eighth, and Greenwood completed his hat-trick with the ninth, sealing one of the most commanding wins in club history.

With this emphatic result, Marseille move into the Round of 16 brimming with confidence. Their next test comes on February 4 at home against Rennes, a clash that now carries heightened expectations after this unforgettable night.
