Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain suffered a shock Coupe de France exit on Monday as city rivals Paris FC claimed a historic 1–0 victory at the Parc des Princes.
Jonathan Ikoné was the hero for Stéphane Gilli’s side, scoring the decisive goal to avenge their recent 2–1 Ligue 1 derby defeat earlier this month.
Despite PSG dominating possession and chances, the holders were unable to find a breakthrough and bowed out in the round of 32.
The first half was largely subdued, with PSG forwards Bradley Barcola, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Gonçalo Ramos all wasting promising opportunities. Paris FC goalkeeper Obed Nkambadio was outstanding, repeatedly denying Kvaratskhelia and keeping his side in the contest.
Against the run of play, Paris FC struck on the counter-attack. Ilan Kebbal slipped a perfectly weighted pass into Ikoné, who controlled calmly before poking the ball past Lucas Chevalier to stun the home crowd.
PSG pushed hard for an equaliser, with Warren Zaïre-Emery crashing a shot against the crossbar and Illia Zabarnyi and Désiré Doué firing wide.
Nkambadio, however, had the final say, producing a brilliant late save to tip Vitinha’s effort over the bar and seal a famous win.
The result marks Paris FC’s first-ever victory over PSG and represents the biggest upset of this season’s Coupe de France round of 32.
It is also only the second time in the last two decades that PSG have been eliminated before the round of 16, following a similar fate against Montpellier in 2014.
Ikoné, meanwhile, continues to shine in the competition, taking his tally to four goals this season — more than any other Paris FC player.
