Police investigate viral video allegedly showing Portable assaulted in custody

The Ogun State Police Command has opened an internal investigation into a viral video allegedly showing Nigerian musician Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, being assaulted while in police custody.

The footage, which has been widely circulated on social media platform X, shows the singer handcuffed, shirtless and visibly distressed, as he pleads tearfully while seated in what appears to be a police detention area. The video has triggered public outrage and renewed concerns over police conduct and human rights violations.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said Portable is currently in custody but stressed that the command does not condone any form of abuse against suspects.

“Yes, he was arrested and he is with us, but that is a different issue,” Babaseyi said. “What is important is the alleged assault that occurred at the station. We do not condone it.”

The police spokesperson also condemned the filming and public circulation of suspects while in custody, describing the practice as unethical and dangerous.

“We don’t condone videoing suspects or putting their faces out there, no matter who the suspect is,” he said.

“Nobody should be treated in such a manner. It endangers the safety of the suspect and compromises investigations.”

Babaseyi disclosed that the command has commenced an internal probe into the incident and assured that officers found culpable would be sanctioned.

“The investigation is ongoing, and any officer found to be involved will be handed over to the appropriate authorities. That process has already started,” he added.

Portable’s arrest is connected to allegations of assault levelled against actress and skit maker Omobolarinde Akinyanju, popularly known as Ashabi Simple, who is one of the singer’s baby mamas.

According to reports, the incident occurred on January 1, 2026, at Portable’s bar in Ogun State, where Ashabi reportedly visited after receiving an invitation from the musician.

An argument allegedly broke out over her status in his life, with Ashabi insisting on being recognised as a wife, while Portable maintained that only his legally married wife, Bewaji, holds that position.

The disagreement reportedly escalated into physical violence, with Ashabi accusing Portable of slapping her, beating her, confiscating phones and threatening her and her siblings with an axe.

In response to the allegations, Portable released a video on Instagram, expressing anger over the lawsuit filed against him and accusing Ashabi of infidelity.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has assured the public that the matter will be thoroughly investigated in line with the law.
