Kaduna health workers deny strike rumours

Medical and health workers in Kaduna State have dismissed reports suggesting they plan to embark on a statewide strike, describing the claims as false and misleading.

The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, Kaduna State Council, made the clarification in a statement issued on Monday and addressed to the Head of Service of the state. The statement was signed by Sani Saulawa on behalf of the union’s chairman.

According to the union, its leadership became aware of unverified social media reports alleging that health workers were preparing for industrial action across the state.

“The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, Kaduna State Council, has no plan whatsoever to embark on any strike action in the state,” the statement said.

The union commended the Kaduna State Government, led by Governor Uba Sani, for what it described as deliberate and proactive efforts to improve the health sector and the welfare of health workers.

It cited the approval and implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure for health workers, including those under the State Primary Health Care Board, as a major achievement.

Other steps taken by the government, according to the union, include the implementation of three years of outstanding promotions, the renovation and upgrading of 255 health facilities and general hospitals, and the provision of essential medical equipment to primary healthcare centres.

The statement also highlighted the supply of ambulances to general hospitals to strengthen referral services, as well as the ongoing recruitment of 1,800 health professionals under the State Primary Health Care Board.

Noting that over 90 per cent of the workforce under the board are members of MHWUN, the union stressed that there was no basis for any strike action.

“There is no justification or intention to disrupt industrial harmony in Kaduna State through any form of strike,” the union said.

While acknowledging that some demands are still outstanding, MHWUN expressed confidence that the state government would address them within the year. It reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue, cooperation and industrial peace, and urged members of the public to disregard rumours of an impending strike.

The clarification follows reports last week that nurses in the state had warned of a possible strike in 2026 over alleged delays in promotion exercises.

The warning was reportedly contained in a New Year message by the Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Kaduna State Council, Comrade Ishaku Yakubu, who expressed concerns about stalled career progression for nurses.

However, MHWUN maintained that it remains focused on engagement with the government and sustaining uninterrupted healthcare services across the state.
